Chapter 8, Problem 10WIO
Summary Introduction
To discuss:
The points before deciding whether to recommend that a cancer-stricken relative should eat more ginger.
Concept introduction:
Cancer is collectively a group of diseases in which abnormal cell growth occurs and it has the potential to infect or spread to other body parts. Cancer is one of the two types of cancer; malignant and benign. Tumor growth is linked with inflammation and oxidative stress. Thus, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties of ginger could play a role in cancer prevention.

You are a drug manufacturer looking to mass produce human insulin. Give a step-by-stepprocedure showing how you could create the bacteria that would make this insulin for you.
This is a grade 12 question, do not use information that wasnt learned.
Your cousin is embracing a sugar-free lifestyle and has made sugar-free jam. Canned food that is low in sugar, acid, and salt can grow a bacteria called Clostridium. Consuming these canned foods can cause a potentially lethal condition called botulism where Clostridium cells release a nerve toxin that causes difficulty breathing and/or muscle paralysis. Give one piece of advice on how to do it at its safest. (0.5) B. Your aunt has asked you to convince your cousin to not eat the jam. What communication style will you use and why? (Note: the mark is for the justification, no assumptions are being made about your relative.)

- Penicillin functions by inhibiting an enzyme, transpeptidase, that catalyzes the last step in the bacteria's metabolism which synthesises bacterial the cell-wall. Why does inhibition of this enzyme make Penicilin such an effective medicine in humans, with so few side effects? A. Inhibiting enzymes like this always slows the metabolism of an organism. B. The enzyme is not inhibited in humans because we have resistance to the penicillin. C. The enzyme is part of an essential pathway in the bacteria, which does not exist in humans. D. - People who eat lots of fruits and vegetables have lower rates of colon cancer than those who eat little of these foods. Fruits and vegetables are rich in “antioxidants” such as vitamins A, C, and E. Will taking antioxidants help prevent colon cancer? A medical experiment studied this question with 864 people who were at risk of colon cancer. The subjects were divided into four groups: daily beta-carotene, daily vitamins C and E, all three vitamins every day, or daily placebo. After four years, the researchers were surprised to find no significant difference in colon cancer among the groups. Explain what sampling method and experimental design you would use to conduct such research. What do you think “no significant difference” means in describing the outcome of the study? Suggest some lurking variables that could explain why people who eat lots of fruits and vegetables have lower rates of colon cancer. (The experiment suggests that these variables, rather than the antioxidants, may be…arrow_forwardYou are now ready to complete the first task about Choices in Biology. In this Activity you have collected details about the consequences of a heavy metal pollutant on human health. You have also identified a cellular biotechnology that uses a microorganism in removing it. Your task is to research one heavy metal endocrine disruptor or heavy metal neurotoxin that affects humans. Using good Self-Regulation skills, you may choose to research the same heavy metal you have been describing in this Activity. Alternatively, review some of the other heavy metals from the class discussion. You may find that the effect of the heavy metal you can describe the best is not the first one you began researching. As you continue your research, keep track of your sources. The important details to collect are: What is the environmental source of the heavy metal? What are the symptoms of being exposed to this heavy metal endocrine disruptor or heavy metal neurotoxin? How many fresh pig carcasses would you need to produce 3 kg of insulin?arrow_forward
- Bovine somatotropin (BST) Is a growth hormone approved to use in the United States to increase milk production in dairy cattle. Currently, It's use is banned in Canada. Independent studies completed by the FDA and world health organization have concluded that milk and meat from cows treated with BST are safe for human consumption. Researchers have shown the trace amount of BST can be found in milk and meat produced by BST-treated cows. BST can also be found in milk from untreated cows as it is naturally produced in the Kouse pituitary gland. BST has the same function and cows as a human growth hormone does in humans. Charlie, and animal rights activist, was concerned with the use of BST and dairy cows. She argued that BST increases the likelihood of cancer and diabetes mellitus in cattle.
