Skill Building Metal Refining (Smelting)
The nickel–metal hydride battery used in power tools and the lead–acid battery used in cars require nickel and lead, respectively. These metals are smelted from sulfur-containing ores such as NiS and PbS.
- a. Name three attributes that distinguish a metal from a nonmetal.
Hint: Review Section 1.6.
- b. To produce elemental nickel, oxygen gas is reacted with an ore of nickel and sulfur, represented as NiS:
Is Ni in the ore oxidized or reduced?
- c. Write the analogous chemical equation for lead, and again identify the species oxidized and reduced.
- d. Why is the release of SO2 a serious problem?
Hint: Revisit Chapter 2.

- You are working in the office of a precious metals buyer. A miner brings you a nugget of metal that he claims is gold. You suspect that the metal is a form of fools gold, called marcasite, that is composed of iron and sulfur. In the back of your office, you have a chunk of pure gold. What simple experiments could you perform to determine whether the miners nugget is gold?arrow_forwardercise 9.5 In Example 9.6 we answered one of the questions we posed in the introduction to this chapter. Now let’s see if you can answer the other question posed there. A chemist analyzing a sample of carbamic acid finds 0.8007 g of carbon, 0.9333 g of nitrogen, 0.2016 g of hydrogen, and 2.133 g of oxygen. Determine the empirical formula for carbamic acid.arrow_forwardA piece of metal wire has a volume of 20.2 cm3 and a mass of 159 g. What is the density of the metal? We know that the metal is manganese, iron, or nickel, and these have densities of 7.21 g/cm3 7.87 g/cm3, and 8.90 g/cm3, respectively. From which metal is the wire made?arrow_forward
