The difference between the integumentary system and integument and the branch of medicine which deals with it.
Introduction:
The integumentary system and integument are associated with animals. It deals with the outer protective covering in humans which we commonly call the skin.
Explanation of Solution
The skin, hair, nails and the glands associated with them called the cutaneous and the subcutaneous glands together to form the integumentary system. The skin is made of epidermis, dermis and hypodermis and forms the outermost layer of the body and is the first physical barrier to foreign substances entering our body. The skin alone is known as the integument.
The hair is keratinized cells which form a filament or strand and protrude out of the skin.
The nails are dead cells which also contain keratinized cells and are present on the tips of fingers and toes.
The glands associated with them are apocrine glands, eccrine glands and sebaceous glands.
The branch of medicine which studies and deals with the integumentary system is known as dermatology.
Thus, the skin is called integument and the hair, nails, sweat and oil glands associated with the skin together form the integumentary system. The branch of medicine which deals with it is known as dermatology.
