When driving on the upper level of the Bay Bridge, west-bound from Oakland to San Francisco, you can easily pick up a number of radio stations on your car radio. But when driving cast-bound on the lower level of the bridge, which has steel girders on either side to support the upper level, the radio reception is much worse. Why is there a difference?

- When a television news anchor in a studio speaks to a reporter in a distant country, there is sometimes a noticeable lag between when the anchor speaks in the studio and when the remote reporter hears it and replies. - An important news announcement is transmitted by radio waves to people who are 85 km away, sitting next to their radios, and by sound waves to people sitting across the newsroom, 3.0 m from the newscaster. - You are working for SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. One day, you receive a radio communication from an alien intelligence. Although you cannot understand their language, they have included some photos from an I Love Lucy episode. The photos allow you to determine that it is the episode in which Lucy makes a television commercial on Vitameatavegamin. This episode first aired on CBS on May 5, 1952. Before running to your supervisor to tell him the news, you quickly determine how far away in light-years the alien civilization is. (Enter the maximum possible distance.) light-years Need Help? (A bit, or binary digit, is the smallest unit of digital information, 1 megabit per second is 1x106 bits per second.)
