In everyday English, the word adaptation means an adjustment to environmental conditions. How is the evolutionary definition of adaptation different from the everyday English sense?
To determine: The way by which evolutionary definition of adaptation is different from everyday English sense.
Introduction: Evolution is a natural process that includes several changes over several generations in the characteristics of a species by the process of natural selection, thereby leading to the evolution of a new species.
Explanation of Solution
Generally, in everyday life, the term adaptation indicates modifications of a specific individual during their lifetime in the living environment for better survival. However, the changes do not influence the process of reproduction. The traits that are developed by the process of natural selection over several generations constitute evolutional adaptations; these traits can also be defined as comparative reproductive fitness. For example, consider the evolution of enzymes in organisms. Organisms that had the ability to synthesize reverse transcriptase had better chances of survival than the organisms that lacked the enzyme.

What are three traits that are currently under natural selection in one or more human populations? What form of selection is acting on those traits? What kinds of data show how selection is acting?arrow_forwardWhich statement is least relevant when examining traits considered as adaptations? A. - Which of the following is correct concerning adaptations? (Choose one.) Group of answer choices a)They always increase an organism's ability to survive better than other individuals in the population. b)They can increase an organism's ability to survive better or reproduce better than other individuals, but not both at the same time. c)They increase an organism's ability to reproduce better than other individuals in the population, in a given environment. d)They result from any mechanism of evolution.arrow_forwardSkin color in humans is an example of an evolutionary trade-off: a situation where a trait that is an advantage in one context is a disadvantage in a different context. Darker skin protects DNA from damage due to ultraviolet radiation (an advantage) but makes it harder for the body to produce vitamin D (a disadvantage).
