A Nonideal Ammeter. Unlike the idealized ammeter described in Section 25.4, any real ammeter has a nonzero resistance. (a) An ammeter with resistance RA is connected in series with a resistor R and a battery of emf ε and internal resistance r. The current measured by the ammeter is IA. Find the current through the circuit if the ammeter is removed so that the battery and the resistor form a complete circuit. Express your answer in terms of IA, r, RA. and R. The more “ideal" the ammeter, the smaller the difference between this current and the current IA. (b) If R = 3.80 ft, ε = 7.50 V, and r = 0.45 Ω, find the maximum value of the ammeter resistance RA so that IA is within 1.0% of the current in the circuit when the ammeter is absent. (c) Explain why your answer in part (b) represents a maximum value.

- Power P0 = I0 V0 is delivered to a resistor of resistance R0. If the resistance is doubled (Rnew = 2R0) while the voltage is adjusted such that the current is constant, what are the ratios (a) Pnew/P0 and (b) Vnew/V0? If, instead, the resistance is held constant while Pnew = 2P0, what are the ratios (c) Vnew/V0, and (d) Inew/I0?arrow_forwardA 10.00-meter long wire cable that is made of copper has a resistance of 0.051 ohms, (a) What is the weight if the wire was made of copper? (b) What is the weight of a 10.00-meter-long wire of the same gauge made of aluminum? (c)What is the resistance of the aluminum wire? The density of copper is 8960 kg/m3 and the density of aluminum is 2760 kg/m3.arrow_forwardResistors are commonly rated at 18W,14W,12W ,1 W and 2 W for use in electrical circuits. - From Kirchoff's law, the current I in an RC (resistor-capacitor) circuit during discharging obeys the equation R ²+²=C² = ( di(t) 1(t) dt a. Find I (t). b. For a capacitance of 10,000 uF charged to 100 V and discharging through a resistance of 1 m2, find the current I for t = 0 and for t = 100 sec. Note: The initial voltage is IR or Q/C, where I = dQ/dt.arrow_forwardTwo identical resistors of R0 = 71 Ω are connected head-to-tail. (a) Express the resistance R0 of one of the resistors in terms of the resistivity ρ, length L, and the cross section area A. (b) Calculate the total resistance R of the two resistors in ohms.arrow_forwardThe circuit in the diagram consists of a battery with EMF E, a resistor with resistance R, an ammeter, and a voltmeter. The voltmeter and the ammeter (labeled V and A, respectively) can be considered ideal; that is, their resistances are infinity and zero, respectively. The current in the resistor is III, and the voltage across it is V. The internal resistance of the battery rintrintr_int is not zero. Part A: What is the ammeter reading I? Express your answer in terms of E, R, and rint. Part B: What is the voltmeter reading V? Express your answer in terms of E, R, and rint. Part C: What is the power PR dissipated in the resistor? Express your answer in terms of I and V. Part D: Again, what is the power PR dissipated in the resistor? This time, express your answer in terms of one or more of the following variables: I, rint, and R. Part E: For the third time, what is the power PR dissipated in the resistor? Express your answer in terms of one or more of the following variables: E, rint,…arrow_forward
- Consider an electrical circuit comprising a battery with voltage V that provides a current I through a resistor network with resistor R1 in series with the parallel combination of R2 and R. Calculate the value of R if: V I R1 R2 2.40E+01 2.40E-01 7.50E+01 5.00E+01 Make sure to express your answer in scientific notation with 2 decimal points.arrow_forwardA student finds two ancient meters with numbered scales but no unit markings. He thinks that one is an ammeter and one is a voltmeter but doesn't know which is which. He measures the resistance of each, finding that meter A has a resistance of 5000 ohms and meter B has a resistance of 0.01 ohms. He can conclude that Group of answer choices A is the voltmeter and B is the ammeter. neither can be a useful meter. B is the voltmeter but A cannot be a useful meter. A is the voltmeter but B cannot be a useful meter. B is the voltmeter and A is the ammeter.arrow_forwardThe two figure panels show two ways to connect a real (non-ideal) voltmeter and a real ammeter in a circuit to calculate the resistance R. The internal resistance of the voltmeter is Rv and the internal resistance of the ammeter is Ra. The current flows from left to right in both panels, and the potential difference Vac between points a and c in both panels is the same. In panel (a) the voltmeter reads Vac = 12.1 V and the ammeter reads I1 = 0.098 A. In panel (b) the voltmeter reads Vab = 12.0 V and the ammeter reads I2 = 0.100 A. - In electrical circuits, the formula 1/R = (1/R1) + (1/R2) is used to find the total resistance R if two resistors and are connected in parallel. Given three resistors, A, B, and C, suppose that the total resistance is 48 ohms if A and B are connected in parallel, 80 ohms if B and C are connected in parallel, and 60 ohms if A and C are connected in parallel. Find the resistances of A, B, and C.arrow_forwardA battery has an emf of ε = 7 V, an internal resistance r = 18 Ω, and is connected to a resistor of R = 65 Ω.
