The medulla and pons are primarily involved in the respiration and its rhythmic patterns. Breathing can occur voluntarily or involuntarily. The automatic, involuntary respiratory cycle is controlled by the medulla oblongata and pons. The voluntary respiration is controlled by the cerebellum.
