Question
Chapter 22, Problem 22.126SP
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
To assign the magnetic character of molecule.
Concept Introduction:
- According to Molecular orbital theory all the electrons previously belonging to the atoms constituting a molecule are considered to be belonging to the entire molecules and move under the influence of all the nuclei present in the molecule. All the orbitals of one atom combines with all the orbitals of other atoms and form two type of new orbitals named bonding and antibonding orbitals.
- According to
Valence bond theory all the non bonded electrons of the atoms in a molecule remains with the atoms and does not lose their individuality. - If all the electrons are paired in the molecular orbitals then molecule is diamagnetic.
- If at least one electron is unpaired in the molecular orbitals then molecule is paramagnetic.
