What is the volume of 67 mol of gas, in the unit of m3, when the pressure is 87 kPa and the temperature is 68°C? Use R = 8.314 J/(K mol) for the gas constant. Be careful with units, and remember that the temperature must be in Kelvin when you use the ideal gas equation.
A cylinder of diameter S, of height h, contains pure gas with equation
PV = nRT at constant temperature T_0. The z axis is directed upwards
and the gravitational field is assumed to be uniform.
1) Using the fundamental principle of hydrostatic statistics, show that
dp = -pgdz where p = p (z) is the gas pressure at height z.
2) If P_0 is the gas pressure at the foot of the pole, calculate the
pressure p (z) at height z.
3) In the case of wind (M = 29 g / mol: R = 8.31J/ mol.k) at
temperature T_0 = 300K, calculate the height of the poles necessary
to observe the change in pressure (pressure at the threshold) at 5% .
Case 1: A container with argon gas is sealed by a movable heavy piston with cross [
sectional area, A. Initially, the piston is in equilibrium, the volume of the gas is V1, and
the system is in thermal equilibrium. The piston is then slowly lifted by external force to
a distance, L, at constant pressure P1. After that, the piston is not allowed to move while
the pressure is reduced to P2.
Case 2: A container with argon gas is sealed by a movable heavy piston with cross
sectional area, A. Initially, the piston is in equilibrium, the pressure of the gas is P1, and
the system is in thermal equilibrium. The piston is then not allowed to move while the
pressure is reduced to P2. After that, the piston is then slowly lifted by external force to a
distance, L, at constant pressure P2.
