The homeostatic regulation of erythropoiesis and the origins and role of erythropoietin.
Introduction:
Erythropoiesis is the formation of red blood cells, and it occurs in the red bone marrow in four different stages: decrease in cell size, increase in cell number, increase in hemoglobin synthesis, shedding of nuclear material along with other organelles. A new supply of RBCs by erythropoiesis is needed to maintain a constant RBC number in the blood as RBCs have a lifespan of 120 days and die at the end of this period.
