One day, after pulling down your window shade, you notice that sunlight is passing through a pinhole in the shade and making a small patch of light on the far wall. Having recently studied optics in your physics class, you’re not too surprised to see that the patch of light seems to be a circular diffraction pattern. It appears that the central maximum is about 3 cm across, and you estimate that the distance from the window shade to the wall is about 3m. Knowing that the average wavelength of sunlight is about 500 nm, estimate the diameter of the pinhole.

- A circular hole is made in a thin opaque sheet. You observe the diffraction pattern made by shining collimated laser light of wavelength 490 nm onto the aperture. Looking at a screen 1.31 m distant from the aperture, you observe a ring of darkness at a radius 10.4 cm relative to the circle centre (corresponding to the place where laser light would hit the screen if there was no aperture). What is the diameter of the hole in microns?arrow_forwardOne leg of a Michelson interferometer contains an evacuated cylinder of length L, =0.30m having glass plates on each end. A gas is slowly leaked into the cylinder until a pressure of 1 atm is reached. If 140 bright fringes pass on the screen when light of wavelength A=440nm is used, what is n, the index of refraction of the gas? State your answer to the nearest 0.000001 ( one part per million).arrow_forwardThe Michelson interferometer can be used to measure the index of refraction of a gas by placing an evacuated transparent tube in the light path along one arm of the device. Fringe shifts occur as the gas is slowly added to the tube. Assume 580-nm light is used, the tube is 5.40 cm long, and 152 fringe shifts occur as the pressure of the gas in the tube increases to atmospheric pressure. What is the index of refraction of the gas? Hint: The fringe shifts occur because the wavelength of the light changes inside the gas-filled tube. (Give your answer to five decimal places.) 4.0arrow_forward
- Babinet's principle says that the diffraction pattern observed when light falls on an aperture of any shape is the same as that obtained when light falls on an object that is the complement of such aperture. A laser with a wavelength of 600 nm is incident on a hair, generating a diffraction pattern with a width of the principal maximum of 10 mm on a screen located 1 m away from the hair. What is the diameter of this wire?arrow_forwardDiffraction can be used to provide a quick test of the size of red blood cells. Blood is smeared onto a slide, and a laser shines through the slide. The size of the cells is very consistent, so the multiple diffraction patterns overlap and produce an overall pattern that is similar to what a single cell would produce. Ideally, the diameter of a red blood cell should be between 7.5 and 8.0 μm. If a 633 nm laser shines through a slide and produces a pattern on a screen 24.0 cm distant, what range of sizes of the central maximum should be expected? Values outside this range might indicate a health concern and warrant further study.arrow_forwardYour physics study partner tells you that the width of the central bright band in a single-slit diffraction pattern is inversely proportional to the width of the slit. This means that the width of the central maximum increases when the width of the slit decreases. The claim seems counterintuitive to you, so you make measurements to test it. You shine monochromatic laser light with wavelength λ onto a very narrow slit of width a and measure the width w of the central maximum in the diffraction pattern that is produced on a screen 1.50 m from the slit. (By “width,” you mean the distance on the screen between the two minima on either side of the central maximum.) Your measurements are given in the table. (a) If w is inversely proportional to a, then the product aw is constant, independent of a. For the data in the table, graph aw versus a. Explain why aw is not constant for smaller values of a. (b) Use your graph in part (a) to calculate the wavelength λ of the laser light. (c) What is…arrow_forward
- The limit to the eye’s visual acuity is related to diffraction by the pupil.D = 2.85 mmdh = 1.25 m a. What is the angle between two just-resolvable points of light for a 2.85 mm diameter pupil in radians, assuming an average wavelength of 550 nm? θmin = b. Take your result to be the practical limit for the eye. What is the greatest possible distance in km a car can be from you if you can resolve its two headlights, given they are 1.25 m apart? L= c. What is the distance between two just-resolvable points held at an arm’s length (0.800 m) from your eye in mm? da =arrow_forwardProblem 7: Consider light falling on a single slit, of width 1.05 μm, that produces its first minimum at an angle of 33.6°.Randomized Variables θ = 33.6°w = 1.05 μm Calculate the wavelength of the light in nanometers.arrow_forwardYou measure three segments of the distance between a diffraction slit an the screen on which the pattern forms: x1 = (15.8 ± 0.2) cm, x2 = (6.7 ± 0.1) cm, and x3 = (11.3 ± 0.1). What is the uncertainty of the total distance x1 + x2 + x3? Group of answer choices 0.4 cm 0.5 cm 0.2 cm 0.3 cm 0.1 cmarrow_forward
- You measure three segments of the distance between a diffraction slit an the screen on which the pattern forms: x1 = (14.7 ± 0.1) cm, x2 = (9.9 ± 0.3) cm, and x3 = (17.2 ± 0.3) cm. What is the uncertainty of the total distance x1 + x2 + x3?arrow_forwardIn the laser range-finding experiments, the laser beam fired toward the moon spreads out as it travels because it diffracts through a circular exit as it leaves the laser. In order for the reflected light to be bright enough to detect, the laser spot on the moon must be no more than 1 km in diameter. Staying within this diameter is accomplished by using a special large-diameter laser. If λ = 532 nm, what is the minimum diameter of the circular opening from which the laser beam emerges? The earth-moon distance is 384,000 km.arrow_forwardSuppose that you have a reflection diffraction grating with n= 105 lines per millimeter. Light from a sodium lamp passes through the grating and is diffracted onto a distant screen. Two visible lines in the sodium spectrum have wavelengths 498 nm and 569 nm. What is the angular separation Δθ of the first maxima of these spectral lines generated by this diffraction grating? How wide does this grating need to be to allow you to resolve the two lines 589.00 and 589.59 nanometers, which are a well known pair of lines for sodium, in the second order (m=2)?arrow_forward
