A Cure for the Common Wart A study conducted by researchers was designed “to determine if application of duct tape is as effective as cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen applied to the wart for 10 seconds every 2 to 3 weeks) in the treatment of common warts.” The researchers randomly divided 51 patients into two groups. The 26 patients in group 1 had their warts treated by applying duct tape to the wart for 6.5 days and then removing the tape for 12 hours, at which point the cycle was repeated for a maximum of 2 months. The 25 patients in group 2 had their warts treated by cryotherapy for a maximum of six treatments. Once the treatments were complete, it was determined that 85% of the patients in group 1 and 60% of the patients in group 2 had complete resolution of their warts. The researchers concluded that duct tape is significantly more effective in treating warts than cryotherapy.

- Question 1 Researchers assigned 120 subjects randomly to two groups. The first group was assigned the treatment and the second was given a placebo. After 30 days the results from the two groups were compared. Select the correct type of study described in the scenario above. Your answer: O Experimental Study o Observational Studyarrow_forwardGreen Tea and Prostate Cancer A preliminary study suggests a benefit from green tea for those at risk of prostate cancer. The study involved 60 men with PIN lesions, some of which turn into prostate cancer. Half the men, randomly determined, were given 600 mg a day of a green tea extract while the other half were given a placebo. The study was double-blind, and the results after one year are shown in the table below. Treatment Cancer No Cancer Green Tea 1 29 Placebo 9 21 (a) Test at a 5% significant level to see if the sample provide evidence that taking green tea extract reduces the risk of developing prostate cancer. (b) Find 98% confidence interval for the difference between two population proportions of men with PIN lesions who get prostate cancer after taking green tea extract and after taking placebo for a year. A test used to detect the virus in a person is positive 90% of the time if the person has the virus (true positive) and 10% of the time if the person does not have the virus (false positive). Fill out the remainder of the following table and use it to answer the two questions below based on a total sample of 100,000 people. Virus No Virus Total Positive Test Negative Test Total 100,000 a) Find the probability that a person has the virus given that they have tested positive. - A company that produces cranberries knows that about 7% of its cranberries are bruised in the baggin process. They changed their bagging method, and they were curious if the proportion of cranberries bruised was different. They tested They tested Ho: p = 0.07 versus Ha: p>0.07 where p is the proportion of cranberries bruised. From a random sample of 600 cranberries they found that 60 were bruised. Those results yielded a test statistic of approximately z = 2.88 and a p-value of 0.004. Assume that the conditions for inference were met. Is there sufficient evidence at the a = 0.01 level to conclude that the proportion of cranberries bruised is different than 7% a Yes, because 10% > 7% Yes, because 0.004 7% ОООООarrow_forwardPrices of diamonds are very sensitive to their weight (measured in carat). For example, the price of a 1 carat diamond tends to be much higher than the price of a 0.99 carats diamond. To study this phenomenon in more detail, we consider two random samples of diamonds, 0.99 carats and 1 carat, each sample of size 23. The average price of 0.99 carats diamonds in the sample is $4451, while the average price of 1 carat diamonds in the sample is $5681. From long-term studies, we know that both the prices of 0.99 carats diamonds and the prices of 1 carat diamonds are normally distributed with standard deviations oj = $1332 (0.99 carats) and o2 = $1613 (1 carat), respectively. (a) Carry out a hypothesis test at significance level 0.01 to evaluate whether the true average price µi of 0.99 carats diamonds is lower than the true average price µ2 of 1 carat diamonds. Specify Ho and Ha, the test statistic, and calculate the p-value or use p-value considerations to conclude. (b) Compute the type II…arrow_forwardTaxpayers who go to a treasury office to pay their contributions complain that they wait more than 7 minutes, so there is a project to open a new box with an average cost of $80,000. The administrator decides to analyze this situation and for this he takes a sample of 14 people, analyzes only one person per day. His analysis consists of measuring the fifth taxpayer who arrives in line and takes the time they wait to go to one of the two current boxes. The times taken are: 4.7, 5.8, 2.0, 6.1, 5.8, 4.7 5.7, 9.4, 5.1, 4.2, 5.9, 8.7, 2.7, 4.8. The administrator wishes to estimate a 95% confidence interval for the mean waiting time of taxpayers, which will allow him to determine whether or not to invest in a new box.a). - Over a 4-month period, among 30 people with bipolar disorder, patients who were given a high dose (10 g/day) of omega-3 fats from fish oil improved more than those given a placebo. This experiment involved a control group of subjects who received a placebo. Why didn't the experimenters just give everyone the omega-3 fats to see if they improved? Choose the correct answer below. O A. They need to avoid confounding the participants. O B. They need to compare omega-3 results to something. O C. They need to conserve omega-3 fats. O D. They need to blind the participants.arrow_forwardThe authors of a paper randomly selected two samples of patients admitted to the hospital after suffering a stroke. One sample was selected from patients who received biofeedback weight training for 8 weeks, and the other sample was selected from patients who did not receive this training. Thirty women in the last three months of pregnancy, free of major health disorders and ranging in age from 15 to 32 years, were selected for the study. Prior to the collection of 20 ml of blood, the participants were told to avoid breakfast, forgo their vitamin supplements, and avoid foods high in ascorbic acid content. From the blood samples, the accompanying plasma ascorbic acid values were determined, in milligrams per 100 milliliters. Is there sufficient evidence to conclude that there is a difference between plasma ascorbic acid levels of smokers and nonsmokers? Assume that the two sets of data came from normal populations with unequal variances. Use a P-value. Click the icon to view the plasma ascorbic acid values.
