Textbook Question
Chapter 1, Problem 1RQ
When installing a motor control system, list four major factors to consider concerning the power system.
Expert Solution & Answer
To determine
The four major factors to be considered when installing a motor control in concern with the power system.
Explanation of Solution
The electrical connections that are associated with a motor, machine, and control unit are easy or complex. However, the below-listed factors should be considered while installing a motor and its control.
- Power source –– Check whether the motor and control unit require a single-phase or three-phase power supply with rated voltage and current.
- Motor connections –– A motor connection should be made based on the information found on the name plate of a motor. The name plate of a motor contains information such as horsepower, service factor, voltage, and full load current rating.
- Controller type –– In general, a motor requires simple controller that starts and stops the motor. In addition, a motor may require controllers that vary the speed of the motor at specified time, inching, and jogging.
- Environment –– The environment should not affect a control unit. The elevated temperature and moisture may affect a control unit.
