Write a note on Adulthood’s Ages and Stages

Expert Solution
Introduction

Adulthood refers to a period of lifespan development in which full physical growth and intellectual maturity have been achieved and certain biological, social, cognitive, personality, and other changes linked with the aging process occur.

Explanation

The period of adulthood begins after adolescence and is divided into early adulthood (20 to 35 years of age); middle adulthood (36 to 64 years of age), and late adulthood (age 65 and older). Middle adulthood is divided into early middle adulthood (36- 44 years of age) and late middle adulthood (45- 64 years of age). Old adulthood is subdivided into three stages: the young-old (65 to 74 years of age), the old-old (75 to 84of age), and the oldest-old (85 and older).

Physically development in early and middle adulthood is defined by a slow, gradual decrease in body functioning, which accelerates as one approach old age. The muscle mass continues to increase through the mid-20s, after which it starts decreasing. The skeletal mass of the body increases until the 30s and then begins to decline, first in the central skeleton (spine and pelvis), and later in the peripheral skeleton (the fingers and toes). Throughout adulthood, the heart muscle eventually grows weaker and the production of both female and male hormones diminishes.

As age increases, there is a slow, very gradual decline in the speed of response in performing intellectual and physical tasks. There is a slow rate of electrical activity and nervous system activity in older adults. The inhibitory functioning and selective attention declines with age. As we get older our social connections and friendships diminish but remain as close as in the early years.
