Question

Why is it important to clean the condenser coils of a household refrigerator a few times a year? Also, why is it important not to block airflow through the condenser coils?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The condenser coils require timely maintenance as they play a major role in cooling the hot refrigerant flowing inside the tube of the refrigerator.  The condenser coils are placed outside the refrigerator, which exposes them to the outer environment that means dust and debris. The dust and debris with some time start to collect at the condenser coils which hinder their action in cooling the hot refrigerant. It leads to more power consumption by the compressor and ultimately decreases the efficiency of the refrigerator. So, for ensuring the smooth working of all the components of the refrigerator, the condenser coils are cleaned by either vacuuming or by dusting them with a paintbrush.
