Why do cell membranes contain cholesterol?

All the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells are enclosed by an elastic, thin covering called cell membrane or plasma membrane. It is an integral part of the cell. It is selectively permeable. These are formed of phospholipid bilayer interlink with cholesterol and with proteins on either side. Cholesterol is an amphipathic molecules that means it contains hydrophobic and hydrophilic part. Hydrophobic portion are repel with water molecules and hydrophilic are water attractive.
