Why did creolisation occur in the Caribbean?
Creole refers to mixed Caucasian-Caribbean descendent, and creolization points to the emergence of a new culture from the amalgamation of different cultural interactions.
The history of the Caribbean showed a great degree of cultural exchange due to colonial rule. The advent of Europeans, mainly Spanish and French, and later Dutch, led to an environment of confluence and cultural dialogue among Europeans. Above all, the native people being solved to slave and later under the direct colonial administration was affected by the European culture and ideals.
Thus, the native religion, language, customs encountered European language and Christianity. Also, over time European people and natives intermarried. This interaction throughout the centuries gave birth to the process of creolization. The mixed descendants encouraged the proliferation of creole languages.
