Question

Why are sprains and cartilage injuries a particular problem?

Expert Solution
Check Mark
Step 1

The mobility of different parts of the body is attributed to the coordinated function of the skeletal muscles and the skeletal system’s bones (the bones that have movable joints between them). Any injury or disorder to the skeletal muscles, the bones, or any tissue associated with them leads to difficulty in moving.

Step 2

Cartilages are present between the bone’s articulating surfaces and ligaments connects bones to one another. The cartilage tissue lacks the presence of blood vessels and thus if it faces an injury the cartilages are not able to repair themselves as there will be no availability of oxygen, nutrients and other factors required for healing. The ligaments are not avascular but have very few blood vessels, thus, an injury to this tissue may heal, but it takes a very long period for repair.
