Which vaccines were developed by Pasteur?
An immune response to certain infections induced by the use of suitable vaccines is known as vaccination (immunization). Vaccines stimulate the antibody-producing B cells to attack the antigen. It helps in the development of memory B cells, which are capable of triggering a second immune response. It can be taken as oral or can be injected. There are four different types of vaccine based on the immune response, germ or microbe involved and technologies used.
Vaccines are first developed via Jenner against smallpox. After ninety years scientist Pasteur developed a vaccine against rabies. The vaccines are named based on the types of antigens used. They are:
- Whole organism vaccine -having killed (inactivated) or live but attenuated whole cells.
- Subunit (purified antigen) vaccines- Toxoid, capsular polysaccharide (conjugated), and recombinant antigen vaccines.
- DNA vaccines.
- Recombinant vector vaccines.
Sabin polio vaccine is an ideal vaccine. It has been effective in protecting against deadly disease caused by the poliovirus. When the vaccine reaches the intestine, it induces the synthesis of IgA molecules and also IgM and IgG class of antibodies.
