Introduction

A multiple treatment reversal design is a single-subject research design. In a multiple-treatment reversal design, the baseline phase is followed by distinct phases in which different kinds of treatments are provided. For example, a psychologist may establish a baseline of behavior for someone suffering from insomnia (A). Then, this is followed by a treatment (B), after which, the psychologist switches to another treatment (C). The subject is then returned to the baseline phase (A). Then, the treatments are reintroduced in a reverse order so as to control carryover effects.

The multiple-treatment reversal design is also known as the ABCACB design.
