The term distal in medicine refers to parts of the body located further away from the center. Just like the hand that is distal to the shoulder, a thumb is distal to the wrist.  Term distal is the opposite of proximal, while proximal indicates proximity.

The radius and the ulna are long, slightly curved bones of the forearm. Radius articulate with the humerus proximally, distally to the bones of the wrist, consisting of the carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges.

Radius is located laterally to the ulna. Proximally, the radius terminates with a disk-shaped head that articulates with the humerus. Distally the radius expands and articulates with the scaphoid and lunate carpal bones and metacarpals to form part of the wrist.

  • Humerus proximally articulates with the scapula to form the shoulder joint, distally it joints with radius and ulna.
  • The sternum is the breastbone and it is connected to the scapula by a long, curved bone called clavicle or collar bone.
