During King Philip's War, Lancaster where she had settled came under attack by the Native Americans. She was caught and held captive along with her children by Native Americans. She was held captive for about three months. After her release, she wrote her experiences in captivity in a book titled A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson.
