What role do social identities (race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religion, etc.) play in democratic backsliding? How can we sustain a multicultural society?

As members of the human association man builds relations on the basis of certain commonalities leading to narrow social identities. These identities help form social groups within the larger umbrella of human civilization. While these identities can be helpful in building inter-personal relations but are so vulnerable to be used as political tools to create segregations and divide in society.
