Platelets are exclusively found in mammals and in other vertebrates thrombocytes circulate as intact mono nuclear cells.

One major function of platelets is the contribution to the haemostasis.

Haemostasis can be defined as process of stopping bleeding at the site where there is interrupted endothelium.

Platelets contribute in haemostasis by following steps;

  • First , platelets attach the substances which are outside the interrupted endothelium.This process is called adhesion
  • Then they modify their shape ,turn on receptors,and cause the secretion of chemical messengers.This process is called activation
  • Then they connect to each other through receptor bridges (aggregations)
