Question

what is the Laboratory diagnosis of influenza A virus subtype H1N1.

Expert Solution
Step 1

In virology, influenza A virus subtype H1N1 is the subtype of Influenza A virus. The outbreaks of H1N1 strains in humans include the 2009 swine flu pandemic and the 1918 flu pandemic. This virus is a orthomyxovirus which contains the glycoproteins haemagglutinin and neuraminidase. For this reason, described as H1N1, H1N2 etc. on the basis of H or N antigens.

Step 2

Laboratory Diagnostic Procedures

A number of tests can be helpful in the diagnosis of influenza but, tests do not required to be done on all patients with suspected influenza. For individual patients, tests are mostly helpful when they are likely to yield clinically useful results that helps with diagnosis and treatment. During a respiratory illness outbreak in a closed setting testing for influenza can be very useful in determining if influenza is the cause of the outbreak.

The diagnostic tests available for influenza include viral culture, serology, rapid antigen testing, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction immunofluorescence assays, and rapid molecular assays. The sensitivity and specificity of any test for influenza may vary by the laboratory that performs the test and the type of test used, the time from illness onset to specimen collection, and the type of specimen tested.
