The freezing point of a substance represents the temperature at which there exists an equilibrium between its liquid and solid form so that the vapor pressures of the two phases are equal. The freezing point  obtained by dissolving a non volatile solute in a volatile solvent is found to be less as compared to freezing point of the pure solvent. The depression in freezing point is a colligative property.
