Question

What is Central venous pressure?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Central venous means the central veins which are entering the heart. There are two main large veins through which the deoxygenated blood from the whole body is returned to the right atrium of the heart for the process of oxygenation. The two large veins are superior vena cava and inferior vena cava.

Step 2

Deoxygenated blood from the upper part of the body is carried by the superior vena cava while the deoxygenated blood from the lower parts of the body like forelimbs and hindlimbs is carried by the inferior vena cava. Deoxygenated blood from the whole body is drained into the right atrium for the process of oxygenation. The central venous pressure is the blood pressure on the central main veins i.e-the superior and inferior venae cavae near the opening at the right atrium. This central venous pressure gives an account of the amount of blood that is returning back to the heart and the ability of the heart to send back the Oxygenated blood to the tissues and organs. The range of central venous pressure is from 2 to 6 mm Hg. A decrease in the Central venous pressure will lead to an increase in the blood pressure which will ultimately alter the cardiac performance.
