What is a microaerophile?
Prokaryotes require different environmental conditions for their survival. Some prokaryotes survive in aerobic conditions and some survive in an anaerobic condition, while some require different concentrations of oxygen to thrive.
Microaerophiles or microaerophilic organisms are microorganisms that require the presence of oxygen for their survival but the environment with lower levels of oxygen than the atmosphere. The reason for such kind of lower oxygen requirement is because microaerophiles cannot ferment so they require little oxygen to carry out aerobic respiration. The amount of oxygen is restricted because they are poisoned by high concentrations of oxygen. Examples of microaerophiles are Helicobacter pylori and Borrelia burgdorferi.
