What happens to compliance and elastance in the disease state of:
Emphysema?
Cystic fibrosis?
Lungs are one of the pivotal organs of the body, they occur in pairs. A pair of lungs is p present in the pleural cavity of the thorax region. As we breathe in the oxygen-rich air travels down from the nasal cavity to the trachea (windpipe), bronchi, Bronchioles, and finally reaches the alveolar sack where the actual gaseous exchange takes place. The oxygen from the air diffuses in the blood and then carbon dioxide from the blood diffuses into the alveolar sack from where the CO2 expels out as we exhale.
The moment we breathe in our lungs expands to accommodate a higher volume of air. This ability of lungs to expand and stretch is known as compliance of the lungs or pulmonary compliance.
The Elastance of the lungs is the pressure applied to stretch and inflate the lungs. It is inversely proportional to compliance.
