Question

What effect does increasing the operating frequency of a 1H NMR
spectrum have on each value: (a) the chemical shift in 5; (b) the
frequency of an absorption in Hz; (c) the magnitude of a coupling
constant J in Hz?

Expert Solution

Step 1

(a)

The chemical shift calculated by using the below formula

Chemical shift = Observed chemical shift (in Hzz) downfield  from TMSfrequency of the NMR spectrometer ( in MHz)

If there is an increase in the operating frequency, then there is no change in the chemical shift value.

(b)

The stronger the operating frequency, the larger the energy difference between the two nuclear spin states, and required higher frequency of an absorption.
