Question

What do you mean by matrix?

Expert Solution
Step 1

An organism is composed of membrane-bound cells that contain protoplasm. The cellular organelles within a cell remain submerged within the protoplasm. Thus the cytoplasmic organelles are surrounded by the liquid matrix, also called a cell matrix. The matrix is dynamic in nature, as the fluid can change from a liquid state into gel.

Step 2

The cell matrix is composed of polymeric microtubules, actin filaments and intermediate filaments. The microfilaments are known to form a layer beneath the cell membrane to provide the cells with structural integrity. The microfilaments also connect the cytoplasmic proteins with the transmembrane proteins, and enable cell junction. During mitosis the centrosomes are anchored to the opposite ends by the microfilaments.
