A. Test for Carbon and Hydrogen
a. Grind or cut paper, dried leaves, wood and cloth into small pieces and mix well with 1.5 grams of cupric oxide.
b. Transfer the mixture to a dry test tube. Cover with a cork fitted with a glass tubing. Attach rubber tubing to the exposed end of the glass tubing. This is your first test tube.
c. Clamp the first test tube on an iron stand in an inclined position and try to distribute the contents by gently tapping it
d. Fill another test tube ¾ full of clear lime water. This is your second test tube.
e. Immerse the end of the rubber tubing from the first test tube to the second test tube.
f. Heat the test tube by holding the Bunsen burner in your hand starting from the middle of the tube going down to the closed end, distributing the heat throughout its contents.
g. Stop heating when a significant change in the lime water is observed.
