The mechanism of weathering turns stable rocks into sediments. In the chapter on Rocks, sediments were mentioned. Rock is decomposed by weathering. It is split into bits. 

Mechanical weathering is separating rock into smaller parts (also known as physical weathering). The smaller pieces are much like the larger, smaller rock. This means that without altering its shape the rock has shifted physically. The smaller pieces are composed with the same minerals as the primary rock.
It is possible to break rocks into smaller parts by many methods. 

  • Ice wedging: it is indeed the principal method of physical weathering in either atmosphere that cycles periodically up and down the freezing point. Ice wedging operates easy, fracturing rocks in areas that cycle upwards and downwards freezing during day and evening and even in areas up and down freezing during the seasons. 
  • Abrasion: It is Another way of physical weathering .  A rock strikes another rock in abrasion. Gravity causes abrasion when a rock slides down a hill or cliff. Moveable water creates abrasion when the water ions clash and bump.The surfaces can be filled by powerful winds that bring bits of sand. Ice carries several bits of rock in glaciers. Bottom of the ice is covered in gravel, against the surrounding rocks.
