What are the five primary tastes? Describe how each type
of tastant causes depolarization of a taste cell.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Across the globe, everyone is fond of eating because of the taste. The taste preferences are determined by different factors, including genetics, experience, childhood experiences, age and preferences change with time. There are different types of tastes present, and the way the tastes are perceived differs with the individual.

Step 2

Five types of primary tastes are sensed by the taste buds of the human body includes sweet, sour, salty, bitter, savory. When the taste buds detect the substance, the taste receptor cells send the signals to gustatory nerves, which send a signal to the CNS for processing.

Three types of taste bud cells are present. Type II cells detect the tastes of bitter, sweet, and umami, and type III cells are detected by sour taste.  An undefined taste buds identify the salt taste.
