Question

what are the detailed steps of cellular respiration

Expert Solution
Step 1

Cellular respiration:

It is metabolic reactions that break down a glucose molecule into ATP molecules and waste products. It occurs in cells. This process occurs in many stages like pyruvate oxidation, glycolysis, kerbs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.

Step 2

In this process, glucose molecules break down into water, carbon dioxide and release ATP energy. In the first step, glycolysis occurs.

Glycolysis:

Glycolysis as the name represents “glyco” means glucose and “lysis” mean to break down which means glucose molecules breakdown. Glucose is made up of six-carbon sugar which converts into 2 pyruvate molecules and 3 organic molecules. In this process, NAD+ converts into NADH. This process occurs in anaerobic conditions.

Step 3

Pyruvate oxidation:

This process occurs in the inner compartment of mitochondria. It converts into 2 carbon molecules which bound to CoenzymeA also known as acetyl CoA. In this process, NADH is produced. This process occurs in aerobic conditions.
