Extracellular fluid represents a body fluid that is found outside the cells. The extracellular fluid is found in other bodily fluids, including blood and lymph. Extracellular fluid can be found in the cavities of the brain, spinal cord, muscles, and other body tissues. The ECF comprises cations such as sodium, potassium, and calcium and anions such as chloride, hydrogen carbonate, and others. The plasma and interstitial fluid make about 97% of the ECF. The remaining portion includes the transcellular fluids. The extracellular fluid is responsible for exchange of substances such as dissolved gases, nutrients, and electrolytes between ECF and cells.
