Question

What are some factors that you believe may influence the M.P of a solid compound and the B.P. or density of a liquid compound?

Expert Solution

Step 1 Melting point of a solid substance

Melting point is the temperature at which a substance changes from solid-state to liquid state of that substance.

The factors which affect the melting point of solid substance are given such as -

a) Intermolecular forces - When the molecules of a solid substance have strong intermolecular forces of attraction then, the molecules bind more strongly and are very difficult to convert into a liquid state which has relatively less attractive intermolecular forces of attraction.

b) Composition - The more close packing the molecules in a substance has the more is the melting point. Because the close packing makes it difficult to separate molecules from solid-state and convert them to a liquid state.

c) Presence of impurities - The presence of impurities in the solid may affect the melting point in such a way that the presence of impurities cause the melting of the substance to be in a wide range of temperature and lowered the melting point.
