Question
What are four things that cells can do to maintain homeostasis?
We all feel more comfortable when our surroundings are
not too hot, not too cold, not too wet, and not too dry. Cells are the
same way. However, a cell's environment is constantly changing.
Homeostasis (hoh•mee.oh.STAY sis) is the maintenance of an
internal balance of conditions in a changing external environment.
In order to survive, your cells need to be able to obtain and use
energy, make new cells, exchange materials, and eliminate wastes.
Maintaining an internal balance allows cells to carry out these tasks.
Organisms behave in ways that maintain homeostasis and
improve survival. For example, eating is important because it
provides nutrients the body needs for growth and repair. An
organism will search out food when it is hungry because the need
to maintain homeostasis drives food-seeking behavior.
