Question

Were all seven steps of the scientific method referenced in the Drug X report summary in this exercise? Explain your answer by correlating each step to information provided in the report summary. Step 1 is Make an Observation, Step 2 is Ask a question & research, Step 3 is formulate a hypothesis, step 4 is test hypothesis, step 5 is analyze data and draw conclusions, step 6 is peer review verification, step 7 is communicate results

Was the reported study data in this exercise qualitative or quantitative? Explain your answer by referencing the definitions of each data type.

Procedure:
1 Review the summary of a published scientific study below:
Patients with multiple sclerosis frequently suffer from blurred vision. Drug X was developed to reduce blurred vision in healthy patients,
but the effectiveness had not been tested on those suffering from multiple sclerosis. A study was conducted to determine if Drug X is
effective at reducing blurry vision in multiple sclerosis patients. To be considered effective, a drug must reduce blurred vision by more
than 30% in patients. Researchers predicted that a 20 mg dose of the drug would be effective for treating blurred vision in multiple
sclerosis patients by reducing blurred vision by more than 30%. Drug X was administered to groups of multiple sclerosis patients at
three doses (10 mg/day, 20 mg/day, 30 mg/day) for three weeks. A fourth group of patients was given a placebo containing no drug X for
the same length of time. Vision clarity was measured for each patient before and after the three-week period using a standard vision
test. The results were analyzed and graphed (See Figure 2), illustrating that more patients receiving 20 mg/day of Drug X per day
exhibited a higher reduction in blurred vision than did the other groups. Researchers concluded that a 20 mg dosage of Drug X was
effective for treating blurred vision in patients with multiple sclerosis. The researchers then submitted their work to a medical journal
where it was reviewed by a panel of vision and multiple sclerosis experts before being published.
