Consider the following reaction: 

P + L k2k1 PL 

where P is the protein, L is the ligand and k1 and k2 are rate constants.

Ka is the equilibrium constant also known as the Association Constant

Ka = k1/k2 = [PL] / [P] [L]    ...EQ1

The reciprocal of the association constant is Dissociation Constant, denoted by Kd

Kd = 1/Ka

     = [P] [L] / [PL]
