Critical Path Method
The critical path is the longest succession of tasks that has to be successfully completed to conclude a project entirely. The tasks involved in the sequence are called critical activities, as any task getting delayed will result in the whole project getting delayed. To determine the time duration of a project, the critical path has to be identified. The critical path method or CPM is used by project managers to evaluate the least amount of time required to finish each task with the least amount of delay.

Professor Garcia has assigned 15 cases in his OM Seminar
class to be completed in a 15-week semester. The students,
of course, are moaning and groaning that the caseload can-
not possibly be completed in the time allotted. Professor
Garcia sympathetically suggests that the students work in
groups and learn to organize their work efficiently. Know-
ing when a situation is hopeless, the students make a list of
the tasks that have to be completed in preparing a case.
These tasks are listed here, along with precedence require-
ments and estimated time in days. Assuming students will
work five days a week on this assignment, how many stu-
dents should be assigned to each group, and what is the
most efficient allocation of tasks? Can 15 cases be com-
pleted in a semester? Explain your answer.
