Queen Nzinga Mbandi was the 17th century ruler of Ndongo (1623-26) which was in southwer, modern-day regions of Congo and/or Angola. She is a formidable example of female rulers, especially of Africa, whose history is often sought to erased or whitewashed.

Her governance was intelligent and strong, and her strategic diplomatic skills were famed since her earlier negotiations, as only a Princess. Yet her rule was filled with numerous betrayals and backtracking, making her Queen of Ndongo and later, Matamba (1630-1663), and losing even that for a period of time. However, with her unparalleled skills as a strategist, she managed to keep her people free for 30 years, even with active attacks from the Europeans.
