Question

The reaction of 1.0 gram of aluminum (Al) and 1.0 gram of oxygen (O2) according to the reaction below produced 1.7 grams of aluminum oxide (Al2O3).

4 Al (s) + 3 O2 (g)  → 2 Al2O3 (s)

Calculate the percent yield of aluminum oxide

Expert Solution
Step 1

Since from the given reaction we can see that 4 mole of Al will need 3 moles of O2 to react completely

And moles of Al taken = mass / Atomic mass = 1 / 27 = 0.03704

And moles of O2 taken = mass / molar mass = 1 / 32 = 0.03125

Hence moles of O2 required for completely reacting with 0.03704 moles of Al = moles of Al X 3 / 4 = 0.03704 X 3 / 4 = 0.0278 approx

Since moles of O2 required is less than the taken

Hence Limiting reagent will be Al
