When bending about the strong axis, shear design value parallel to grain F When calculating deflection for a beam loaded about a strong axis, use the elasticity modulus. E

A glulam of the Western Species is Douglas Fir. It is acknowledged that the Stress Class 24F-1.7E is a bending combination. NDS Supplement Table 5A is used as the source for reference values. The strong axis of the member is what bends. The tension laminations are on the bottom of the beam, and the member is fitted correctly (top-side up). The bottom of the member is subject to bending tension loads, and the moment diagram is positive the entire length of the span. Thus, it is established that the standard bending stress (that is, the adjusted ASD "tension zone stressed in tension" value F applies to the problem at hand; but for illustrative purposes, the "compression zone stressed in tension" design value F will also be determined in this example).

The shortest duration load in the combination is wind, and C_{D} = 1.6 . Any design value adjustment factors in NDS Table 5.3.1 that are not shown in this example do not apply to the given problem or have a default value of unity. Recall that : C_{D} does not apply to F_{c} or to E.
