Criterion C- Inequalities Error Analysis
A student was tasked with the problem below and showed their work in orange. Your task is to explain whether
this student answered the following questions correctly or not and to explain, in detail, how you know.
Tanner's Taxi Service charges a $6 fee plus $0.50 per mile.
His twin brother Joel starts a rival business where he charges $0.80 per mile but does not charge a fee.
If a passenger had a measly $20, how far could they travel with either Tanner's or Joel's taxi services?
1. Write a cost inequality for each cab service in terms of the number of miles.
Tanner's Taxi Service: $6 + 0.5x < $20
Joel's Taxi Service: 0.8x 2 $20
Write your response in this box.
I don't think this student's answer is correct because I don't know why they would used greater than/less
than or equal to signs, when they could've just had put
2. Graph both cost inequalities.
