Investigate and report on the Direct Impact of a Jet of fluid on a series of flat plates (blades) mounted
on the periphery of a large wheel. The plates are radially mounted over the wheel. The wheel is
supported over a shaft, with a suitable bearing which ensures the easy rotation of the wheel. It is
expected that the jet of fluid while moving at a given velocity V will strike the plate in succession
causing the wheel to rotate.
The velocity v of the jet after striking the wheel equals the velocity of the plates at the impact point.
1. Sketch the fluid
2. Based on the given specifications, propose the appropriate equations which may be used to
compute the following parameters of the system: a)The force exerted by the jet on the wheel.
b)The work done per second-i.e. the output power, c)The Energy supplied by the jet per second-i.e.
the input power, d) the hydraulic efficiency of the system.
3. Highlight potential risks with respect to the use of the wheel to generate electricity, and propose
management and contingency plans to be implemented by the appropriate personnel.

- Consider the propeller tube shown in. The density of air is Pa = 1 23 kg/m. The diameter of the nozzles at B, C, D, and E is 100 mm 100 mm 0.5 m M D 60 rad/s 0.5 m 0.5 m 0.5 m Part A If the propeller tube rotates at a constant rate of 60 rad/s when 1.80 kg/s of air enters at A, determine the frictional torque M acting on the tube. Express your answer to three significant figures and include the appropriate units. Enter positive value if the moment is counterclockwise and negative value if the moment is clockwise.arrow_forwardConsider the flow of a fluid at speed v0, through a cylindrical pipe of radius r. What would be the speedof this fluid at a point where, because of a constriction in the pipe, the fluid is confined to a cylindricalopening of radius r/4?arrow_forwardQuestion Water enters the horizontal circular nozzle with the inlet diameter of 5 in. At the inlet section, fluid has uniformly distributed velocity of 20 ft/s and pressure of 85 psi. The water exits from the nozzle into the atmosphere at the outlet section where the uniformly distributed velocity is 100 ft/s. Determine the axial component of the anchoring force required to hold the contraction in place. Answer The axial component of the anchoring force required to hold the contraction in place is lbf.arrow_forward
