This article looks at two linked topics: how the degree of self-reference that people draw in determines their influence and what variables could direct self-reference impact. Respondents watched advertisements that differed in two factors intended to influence the use of self-reference, namely the wording of the promotion copy and the angle from which the promotion image was shot. The findings revealed that an underlying increase in self-referring improved influence, whereas a subsequent increase destroyed it. However, these effects only occurred when respondents were really motivated to complete the campaign. Self-referring also had no effect when the motivation of the advertisement recipients was low.
