Sally Duncan, a 20-year-old female college student, presents to the clinic with complaint of frequent migraines, more than five in a month. She has no warning or aura of the headache beginning. She has severe throbbing pain in her head on one side with photophobia (discomfort increased with light), nausea, vomiting, and she can only get relief by lying down in a dark, cool environment, placing a cool compress on her forehead and taking over-the-counter ibuprofen. She stated if she misses any more classes or tests she may fail this semester. If she fails this semester, she is out of the nursing program because it is her second failure. She stated she gets 4 hours of sleep a night, has trouble concentrating during classes, and does not have time to eat properly. Her diet is full of junk food from the vending machines near her classes. The LPN/LVN provides the client with a migraine diary at http://hcp.mychronicmigraine.com/300-Headache-Diaries. Sally asks the LPN/LVN what can be done to help her with the stress-related disorder, migraine headaches so she can make it through school.
