Potassium hydrogen phthalate is a solid, monoprotic acid frequently used in the laboratory to standardize strong base
solutions. It has the unwieldy formula of KHC, H4O4. This is often written in shorthand notation as KHP.
How many grams of KHP are needed to exactly neutralize 29.0 mL of a 0.402 M calcium hydroxide solution?

Step 1

Potassium hydrogen phthalate will be represented as KHP for simplicity.

  • The reaction between calcium hydroxide and KHP is shown below:-

Ca(OH)2+ 2KHP---> Ca(KP)2+ 2H2O .

 • According to the equation, 2 mole of KHP reacts with 1 mole of Ca(OH)2. This is the stoichiometric ratio between KHP and Ca(OH)2  is 2:1 .

 • First, the number of moles of Ca(OH)2  that reacted will be calculated (volumes converted to liters).

Moles of Ca(OH)2 = (0.402 M * 0.029 L )

                     = 0.011658  moles .
