Providing security for Very Important Persons (VIPS)-range from government officials to movie stars- when they appear in public, typically means deploying protective barriers such a concrete walls or Plexiglass shields.
A new product aims to replace these obstructive protection devices. IBIS Technologies, a threeyear-old company based in Butler, California, has developed an Instantaneous Personal Protection System (IPPS). The IPPS is a cross between an aircraft ejection seat and a car air bag. In less time than a car can register the sound of gunfire, the IPPS surrounds the intended victim with a bullet proof shield. This new security device can sit on the floor next to the VIP or terrorist target, or it can be used a security guard in a busy lobby, disguised as a set of decorative planters. How does IPPS work? A radar sensor detects incoming objects (such as bullets, knives or missiles) and triggers an inflated air bag. The bullet-proof material traps the projectile like a baseball glove folding around a ball. In demonstrations, the shield has deployed quickly enough to survive assaults from a .22-caiber through .44-caliber magnum rounds, submachine guns, shotgun blasts at close range, and a knife-wielding attacker. Its detection range is about 150 feet. The device can also be fired by radio control. The fully installed system weighs 400 pounds.
The IPPS technology can be extended to other applications, such as protecting vehicle and securing windows on buildings. A key challenge will be the ability to detect electronic signals that might set of the system accidentally, such as cellular phone or aircraft radar. Despite these challenges, IBIS Technologies Corporation has been selected as a top technology stock pick by several hedge fund managers a company that will do very well in the future.

Malaysian Government has launched a few series of movement control orders (MCO) to break the chain of transmission with the ultimate aim of leveling the rate of infection. As a CEO of the company, you have no choice but to restructure companies and cut the salaries of your employees to survive in the industry. You decided to deduct 30% of employee's salary while 50 of professional staff will be advised to have Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS). As a result of this situation, some of well performing employees have decided to quit from the job by opting for better opportunities, while the rest of the staff have started reducing their work quality and productivity. - Rick Wing, salesperson for Wave Soldering Systems, Inc. (WSSI), has provided you with a proposal for improving the temperature control on your present machine. The machine uses a hot-air knife to cleanly remove excess solder from printed circuit boards; this is a great concept, but the hot-air temperature control lacks reliability. According to Wing, engineers at WSSI have improved the reliability of the critical temperature controls. The new system still has the four sensitive integrated circuits controlling the temperature, but the new machine has a backup for each. The four integrated circuits have reliabilities of 0.82, 0.84, 0.86, and 0.88. The four backup circuits all have a reliability of 0.82. a) The overall reliability of the new temperature controller =% (enter your response as a percentage rounded to two decimal places). 1. If you pay a premium, Wing says he can improve all four of the backup units to 0.91. the overall reliability of the new temperature controller with the…arrow_forwardRead the following case. Then answer the question that follows. Research Study The quality of care given by health care providers can literally be a matter of life or death. Some of the most vulnerable patients are those in long- term skilled nursing facilities. Ensuring the safety and well-being of these residents is both critical and challenging. A study conducted at a facility in Massachusetts specializing in the treatment of people with a chronic illness showed that the implementation of a WiFi-based localization system cut the average time needed to find residents from over 5 minutes to less than 2 minutes. It also alerted staff with a high degree of accuracy when high-risk residents went outside (false positive rate of 9.1%; false negative rate of 1.7%). Devices were mounted on residents' wheelchairs, and monitoring software was installed on staff computers. The facility in the study already had a WiFi system installed. The study's authors conclude that "Using timely resident…arrow_forwardThe following is an excerpt from a conversation between two sales clerks, Tracy Rawlin and Jeff Weimer. An electronic component in a satellite radio made by Spacescope, Inc. has a failure rate of λ = 0.0000165 units/hour. Find the mean time to failure (MTTF). What is the probability (assuming an exponential probability distribution) that the component will not have failed after 20,000 hours of operation? Calculate your answer using the appropriate mathematical formula and verify your result using Excel. Then draw the reliability function to verify your answer visually. 2. Magnaplex, Inc. has a complex manufacturing process, with three operations that are performed in series. Because of the nature of the process, machines frequently fall out of adjustment and must be repaired. To keep the system going, two identical machines are used at each stage; thus, if one fails, the other can be used while the first is repaired (see accompanying figure). - Having a good system of internal controls is essential for businesses to minimise risks, and ensure efficient operations and compliance with relevant law and regulations. However, no matter how good the system of controls, it can never eliminate risk entirely. Identify and explain THREE reasons why this is so.arrow_forwardTraditional face-to-face teaching still plays a critical role in teaching and learning; however, challenges such as COVID-19 has necessitated the introduction of Learning Management Systems (LMS) in higher educational institutions at a large scale. An LMS is a software system designed to aid teaching and learning which operates in the World Wide Web, hence, having the flexibility of anytime access (Ho, Higson, Dey & Xu, 2009). Riversdale College has invested in a Learning Management system to create, share and manage the delivery of educational content. The LMS goal is in enhancing teaching and learning. The main aim of Riversdale College is to provide excellent educational opportunities that are responsive to the needs of a demographically diverse student population and equip them to exceed challenges as active participants in shaping the future of our world. Riversdale College uses the LMS in more innovative ways like student engagement, creating and editing content,…arrow_forwardImagine that you are a new employee in the engineering organization of a large camping equipment and outdoor furniture manufacturing firm.
